Can You Cook McCain Jacket Potatoes in an Air Fryer? We Tested It So You Don’t Have To

On a Tuesday at around seven o’clock in the evening, the oven seems like too much. The thought of having to wait an hour and twenty minutes for a baked potato begins to seem subtly ridiculous, even though you want something appropriate—something warm and satisfying. To be honest, it makes sense that frozen jacket potatoes and air fryers came together at that precise moment.

In a nutshell, you can cook McCain jacket potatoes in an air fryer. Yes, simply and confidently. However, the longer solution—the one that really counts if you want the inside to be fluffy and the skin crispy rather than rubbery and disappointing—involves a little more subtlety than just tossing a frozen spud into a basket and pushing a button.

By design, McCain’s Ready Baked Jacket Potatoes are cooked before being frozen. That’s their purpose. The air fryer’s function is essentially reheating and crisping rather than cooking from scratch because these aren’t raw potatoes that just happen to be frozen; instead, they’ve been through an oven at the factory. People are unaware of how important this distinction is. When it comes to that task, an air fryer excels. It’s really difficult to get that slightly blistered, salted skin in a microwave, but the circulating hot air hits every surface of the potato equally.

The majority of those who have tested this find that the ideal temperature is between 160°C and 200°C, and that cooking times should be between 25 and 30 minutes after freezing. Though there is a balance to be struck, the higher end of the temperature range, about 200°C, tends to produce a crispier result. If you stay too hot for too long, the outside will turn dark before the center is completely heated. Although different machines differ more than manufacturers like to acknowledge, setting the air fryer to about 200°C and checking after 25 minutes seems like the sensible middle ground.

For those who truly can’t wait, there is a quicker option that is surprisingly effective. The frozen potato should be placed straight into the air fryer at 180°C for an additional eight minutes after being microwaved on full power for approximately five minutes. Heat-through is handled by the microwave; everything that the microwave is not good at is handled by the air fryer. Although using two appliances instead of just one is a bit of an inelegant method, the outcome is noticeably better than using a microwave alone and much faster than air-frying all the way through.

It’s important to be clear that expecting the microwave-only method to achieve the same results as an air fryer is what doesn’t work. The skin remains somewhat soft and pale, giving it an unfinished appearance. That approach exists for a reason, and the majority of those who have switched don’t use it again.

The way this specific kitchen habit has proliferated is subtly instructive. Around 2022, air fryers started to gain real traction in British homes due in part to their speed and in part to the energy cost argument during a time when electricity bills were difficult to ignore. Convenience foods that were frozen, like McCain’s jacket potatoes, benefited almost instantly. They were given a second chance at life in a new appliance that the packaging hadn’t yet caught up to recommend.

Although the cooking community has long since surpassed the label, it’s still a little unclear whether McCain formally supports the air fryer method on current packaging. This has been stress-tested enough times by home cooks in the UK that a consensus has emerged: 200°C, 25 to 30 minutes, no thawing, and check with a knife through the center at the end. It’s finished if the knife slides clean.

Of course, the toppings are a whole other story. The traditional version of tuna mayonnaise that keeps coming up in recipes is tuna mayonnaise with spring onion and chives; it never seems out of style. Soured cream with chives, baked beans, and mature cheddar are all reliable. Notably, the air fryer produces a skin that is edible instead of setting to one side. That alters your perspective on the entire situation. Once you’ve made it this way, it’s difficult to ignore that detail.

The technique works whether you’re using a Ninja, Cosori, or something a little older that was taken out of a cupboard. Put the frozen potato straight into the basket. No foil or oil is required. Adjust the temperature, take a 25-minute break, and return to something that truly embodies what a jacket potato is meant to be. There will still be the oven waiting. It has a little more time to wait.
