Tyson Fury Weight Gain – The Untold Story Behind Boxing’s Most Controversial Body

Tyson Fury stepping on a scale has an almost theatrical quality. It has never been a low-key, personal event. Over the course of his career, the number that appears has served more as a plot point than a measurement, recurring every few years with a stubborn, almost comical consistency.

After his incredible upset victory over Wladimir Klitschko, the most extreme phase occurred between 2016 and 2018. What ought to have been a moment of triumph became something more sinister. Fury completely disappeared from boxing and entered a phase that he has since described in unvarnished and awkward terms. Cocaine, depression, and a total disengagement from training were combined with industrial amounts of beer, twenty pints at a time, four or five nights a week, according to his own account. Naturally, the weight followed. Fury believes he weighed about 400 pounds at his heaviest. According to him, the stretch marks he still has are a constant reminder of the damage that time did to his body.

It’s remarkable how detailed Fury becomes when discussing that aspect of himself. He pointed to his own body and remarked, “This belly was out here, this back was out here,” in a 2018 interview. “I had wings on me.” It sounds more like someone describing an outsider than their own reflection. Perhaps that’s the point. He felt truly alienated from that person, which may be why anyone who was paying attention found the eventual return to be so emotionally significant.

He had dropped to about 259 or 260 pounds by the time he began training for Deontay Wilder in late 2018. One could interpret that change as solely physical, but that would be ignoring what was truly taking place. While the world watched and often doubted him, Fury had fought his way back from a place most professional athletes never go. According to his own account, his wife Paris told him straight out that he was too overweight to box again. The way he recounts that tale has an almost loving quality, as if he needed to hear it.

However, as a narrative thread, the weight never completely vanished. Before a rematch with Oleksandr Usyk in Riyadh in December 2024, Fury weighed 281 pounds, which was about 55 pounds more than his opponent. Former mixed martial arts fighter and dependable commentator Chael Sonnen described this as a miscalculation rather than preparation. According to reports, Fury separated himself from his family, entered what his camp called “beast mode,” and came out of it heavier than many people realized. The battle was lost by him. Usyk’s scorecards showed 116-112. As usual, Fury contested both the outcome and the reasoning behind it.

Then, in January 2026, Fury announced another comeback and shared training videos from Thailand. Comments about his weight, inquiries about his shape, and the well-known chorus of worry and ridicule that follows him into each new chapter were all part of the predictable online response. Depending on how you interpret him, his response was either incredibly self-assured or bordering on delusional. “I beat everybody with a fat belly,” he declared to his Instagram followers. “Never made any odds before.” Before fighting again, he stated that he was about 20 stone and that his goal was to be under 19.

It’s difficult to ignore the fact that Tyson Fury has created a whole mythology based on the notion that he is exempt from the regulations that apply to other athletes. It’s really unclear if that mythology will hold up in the ring at 37 years old after losing to Usyk twice in a row. He did, after all, go from weighing 400 pounds to becoming one of the most technically proficient heavyweights in contemporary history, so his argument is persuasive. Wilder was defeated by him three times. He did bring titles together.

However, the sport of boxing penalizes emotion. The canvas doesn’t care what Fury says about his weight, which has been a complex, rich, and occasionally genuinely moving story. The subsequent events in that ring will create their own version.
