The McDonald’s Pumpkin Pie Return Nobody Saw Coming (While Pumpkin Spice Got the Boot)

There is a subtle change in the fast food industry every September. The drinks turn amber, the signage becomes warmer-toned, and people are posting pictures of cardboard sleeves on social media. McDonald’s has been playing this game for years, but this fall it’s taking a slightly different approach, and the response has been genuinely fascinating to observe.

The McDonald’s Pumpkin & Crème Pie has returned. No big campaign, no press conference. It first appeared in Brooklyn, then Dallas, then Los Angeles, and finally in sporadic Midwest Ohio locations, posting on Facebook as if nothing out of the ordinary was going on.

The pie’s baked, sugar-coated pastry shell is divided in half, with a smooth crème filling on one side and a spiced pumpkin filling on the other. A tidy little rectangular package with two different flavors that don’t mix. It’s an inexpensive seasonal treat that requires very little commitment, costing about $2.39 for one or $3.99 for two, depending on where you live. This is likely the reason why fans have responded to its comeback with the kind of fervor typically associated with something much more significant.

The timing is crucial because McDonald’s made an unexpected decision regarding beverages at the same time. This year, the Caramel Apple Pie coffee series—iced, hot, blended, and dripped—replaces the Pumpkin Spice Latte, a McCafé mainstay since 2016. In any case, Starbucks invented that beverage back in 2003, and McDonald’s spent years catching up.

As a result, McDonald’s was never truly the spiritual home of the PSL. Now, dropping it seems less like a defeat and more like a tacit acknowledgment that pursuing Starbucks on its own terms was futile. It seems like McDonald’s is attempting to own a lane instead of borrowing one with the apple-and-caramel pivot.

The return of Pumpkin & Crème Pie seems to be doing some of the emotional heavy lifting here, providing pumpkin fans with something to cling to while the chain redefines its beverage identity. It’s difficult to tell if that was the plan or just the way it landed. The pie has not been officially announced by McDonald’s. Although it appears at drive-thru locations nationwide and on the national website, the chain hasn’t made the customary announcement. Contrary to popular belief, this low-key approach has made the item seem more unique, as if it takes some work and good fortune to find.

These days, it’s difficult to ignore how the dessert menu at McDonald’s has evolved into its own seasonal narrative. For the first time since 1992, the Fried Apple Pie made a comeback in June. The Pumpkin & Crème Pie is currently quietly making a comeback. With the exception of McFlurry variations and the occasional Shamrock Shake, the warm baked apple pie was the chain’s main dessert offering for many years. Dessert can be a destination rather than an afterthought, as evidenced by the recent run of limited-time pies, which feels like a recalibration.

As expected, fans’ response has been enthusiastic and somewhat chaotic. Reddit called it “probably my favorite dessert from a fast food spot.” Within hours of the initial sightings, comments on food-spotting accounts filled up. Before the pie was even formally confirmed nationwide, one commentor acknowledged having “two already.” A marketing budget is unable to create the kind of grassroots momentum that spreads city by city through social media posts and app checks. It simply occurs when a product is truly enjoyed.

The practical drawback is the inconsistent availability. It isn’t available at every McDonald’s, and there isn’t a trustworthy rollout schedule that has been made public. The McDonald’s app is the safest way to find one because it will indicate whether a nearby location is stocking it instead of requiring the risk of a physical drive.

What costs $2.39 in one city might cost slightly more or less in another due to price variations. With its sugar-dusted crust and 280 calories, it’s the kind of thing that’s worth making a little extra effort for—for a short while, before it vanishes once more until the following year.

Fall at McDonald’s has always been a compromise between what customers genuinely want to eat and what the chain wants to sell. It appears that they may have struck the correct balance this year, as the Pumpkin & Crème Pie has subtly reappeared at drive-thrus from Brooklyn to Los Angeles.
