How Did Big Pun Gain So Much Weight? The Untold Story Behind Hip-Hop’s Greatest Tragedy

The majority of people have never seen a picture of Christopher Rios when he was a teenager. With his arms raised in a boxing stance, he is focused and slender. It doesn’t resemble the man who would eventually weigh more than 600 pounds and perform on rap stages. It doesn’t appear to be a person who would pass away at age 28. However, those two incarnations of the same person are not as dissimilar as they appear, and it takes more than just food to understand how one became the other.

The South Bronx was burdened by decades of economic neglect when Big Pun was growing up there. He was an avid reader, a basketball player, a boxer, and, by most accounts, a physically fit young man. However, home life was unstable in ways that people often carry with them long after they depart. At fifteen, he moved out. He spent some time without a place to live. At a young age, he became a father. These are most likely the story, not just little footnotes.

Pun weighed 180 pounds when he was eighteen. An eighteen-year-old who is athletic and in shape. Then something changed. He stopped attending school, the stresses of early adulthood increased, and he started using food in the same way that others use drugs—for solace, for a brief period of time when the cacophony subsides. Although it was rarely discussed in those terms at the time, depression was most likely at its core. He put on 120 pounds in just three years. By age 21, he weighed 300 pounds.

Even looking back, what transpired over the next ten years is difficult to witness. Throughout the early 1990s, the weight increased gradually, alternating between obese and morbidly obese. The music then started. He recorded his debut album Capital Punishment in 1997, met Fat Joe in 1995, and became the first Latino solo rapper to reach platinum status in 1998. It’s possible that fame made matters worse: promotional cycles, erratic sleep patterns, touring schedules, and a lack of time or structure to deal with what was obviously turning into a health emergency. Deterioration and success are occurring simultaneously.

In the summer of 1999, Fat Joe sent Pun to a weight-loss program at Duke University because he truly cared about his friend. He weighed about 600 pounds at that time. He did lose about 100 pounds there, which gives you an idea of what structured support and a break from old routines can accomplish. However, he dropped out of the program before finishing it. The weight returned completely in four months. It’s difficult not to view that as the pivotal moment—the final genuine window that was prematurely closed.

Pun’s friends were always concerned, but the topic became so sensitive that he stopped dining with them. That detail has a subtly devastating quality. Additionally, the thing that was killing him had grown too painful to talk about, so it was done in private. In his last weeks, his wife Liza saw that his body had started to clearly deteriorate; his skin appeared abnormal, he was throwing up after meals, and something had fundamentally failed.

Christopher Rios had a massive heart attack in a hotel room in White Plains two days after pulling out of a Saturday Night Live performance. He was twenty-eight. According to some reports, his heart had tripled in size. His weight was 698 pounds.

There is no easy answer to the question of how Big Pun put on so much weight, and it most likely never did. There are uncomfortable intersections between addiction, depression, poverty, trauma, and a music industry that ignored his crisis while praising his talent. He wasn’t indolent. He wasn’t apathetic. He was a person attempting to endure past suffering by doing whatever was effective, and food was effective until it wasn’t. That’s a tale as old as addiction itself, but it took place in public, on a large scale, and under stage lights.

Twenty-five years later, it’s still amazing how much untapped talent was present in a life that was obviously difficult. The death penalty is still applicable. The delivery is surgical, and the rhymes are complex. In one version of the tale, he receives the help he requires in his early twenties and goes on to record ten more records. It’s worth considering, not because it makes any changes, but rather because it most likely ought to.

She's spent years eating her way across the UK — from roadside chippies to countryside gastropubs — and writing about what she finds there with the kind of honest enthusiasm that doesn't require a Michelin star to appreciate good food. At Friar Street Kitchen, Tiffany covers everything from everyday cooking questions and British supermarket staples to the bigger conversations happening around food, health, and how we eat. Her writing tends to start in the kitchen and end up somewhere more interesting — because that's usually where food takes you if you pay attention. When she's not testing recipes or digging into the latest food trend, she's probably debating the correct way to make a proper cup of tea.
