JD Vance Weight Loss Confession at White House Briefing Leaves Press Room Stunned

It began on Fat Tuesday, of all places. JD Vance mentioned to his wife, Usha, that he was considering giving up sugar for Lent during a quiet domestic conversation that doesn’t typically make it into a White House press briefing. He has previously stated that he takes his Christian faith seriously and that Lent is not a symbolic act for him. It’s a real self-denial exercise.

In search of a helpful hint, he picked up the phone and called Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the Secretary of Health and Human Services. Instead, he received something far more intense: “Bobby Kennedy says, ‘No, no, no. During the first White House press briefing in more than 40 days on September 3, Vance told Fox News correspondent Peter Doocy, “I’ve got something that’s way better than that and way more intense.”

RFK Jr.’s advice was simple, if not particularly tasty: lots of sauerkraut, a lot of protein, and a firm “goodbye” to the kind of eating that seemed to characterize the first few months of his vise presidency. The briefing room seemed to enjoy Vance’s dry wit when he summarized it. “If you want to lose weight, call Bobby Kennedy,” he replied. “And if you want to enjoy what you eat, do not call Bobby Kennedy.”

Watching a sitting vise president discuss fermented cabbage in real time while standing at a White House podium with cameras rolling and reporters positioned is truly unexpected. Even Vance appeared to recognize the ridiculousness.

He acknowledged the peculiarity of the situation without quite avoiding it, given the escalating conflict in Iran and the ongoing financial strain on American households. “When you’re the vise president of the United States and one of the first questions during a press conference at the White House is how much weight you lost, you must have gotten very fat,” he said to Doocy. There was laughter at the line. It was intended to.

For months, the JD Vance weight loss narrative has been developing covertly. Before the media formally inquired about it, people in Washington became aware of it. Vance, who reportedly lost about 30 pounds, was unable to avoid the attention that public figures receive when their physical appearance changes noticeably. Doocy’s question wasn’t particularly challenging. It was the logical conclusion to weeks of conjecture and observation within the Beltway.

The structure surrounding weight loss is more fascinating than the weight loss itself. Vance linked the entire situation to Lent, faith, and a purposeful act of discipline as opposed to conceit. During that time, he even talked about giving up social media and instructing his team to post on his behalf if something needed to be shared. It’s easy to miss that detail, but it suggests that someone is attempting to quiet outside noise while making internal adjustments. Your level of goodwill toward him will likely determine whether that comes across as politically calculated or truly personal. It could be both.

In Washington, RFK Jr.’s impact on the dietary preferences of high-ranking administration officials has developed into a minor narrative. In an August podcast, Secretary of State Marco Rubio was blunt as usual about Kennedy’s regimen. “This is a diet that consists of eating sauerkraut and meat,” Rubio stated. “This is not a sustainable thing.” Jeanette, his wife, implied otherwise. Rubio persisted, pointing out that RFK Jr. seems to travel with coolers of sauerkraut—a practical decision that obviously does not sit well with everyone at the cabinet table.

At a White House Rose Garden dinner a few days prior, President Trump contributed to the larger discussion about weight loss, albeit in his own very unvarnished manner. He related an anecdote about an unidentified Wall Street friend who was having trouble paying for GLP-1 medications and navigating the difference between the cost of those drugs in London and New York. Vance’s approach to the subject was very different from Trump’s. Self-deprecation was one way to find humor. The other reached for it using a completely different narrative.

This administration has had a unique opportunity to engage in discussions about food, diet, and personal health that previous administrations mainly avoided thanks to the MAHA movement, or Make America Healthy Again. At the briefing, Vance leaned into that framing, characterizing himself as someone who dislikes taking medications and stating that, when feasible, he prefers to deal with things through lifestyle adjustments.

It’s unclear if protein and sauerkraut actually helped a sitting vise president lose thirty pounds or if other factors played a role. However, the narrative he shared was clear, precise, and strangely relatable: a man calls a friend for diet advice and receives more than he anticipated. Moments like that are rare in Washington.
