Illinois Governor JB Pritzker appeared in running shoes on a Tuesday morning along the lakefront in Chicago. Even that tiny, nearly insignificant detail seemed to subtly hint at something more significant. He encountered a reporter outside, moving in the early light, rather than in a press office or conference room. The pants were a bit baggy. Compared to before, the jacket settled differently. There was a change.
It’s difficult to ignore, particularly when the person making the changes is a sitting governor with a proven track record of carrying a lot of weight, and there are growing rumors that he may run for president in 2028.

In a time when political stories are never in short supply, Pritzker’s weight loss has emerged as one of the more widely discussed political stories in America. He weighed about 300 pounds not too long ago, according to estimates. He was estimated by observers and health commentators to be between 230 and 240 by the beginning of 2026. That’s a big change. After months of early mornings and four or five miles at a time, that body is completely different.
If nothing else, he has been candid about the walking. He said, “Walking outside is great for your mental health,” to NBC Chicago. “It just gives me a real break from the early, burly challenges of everyday life.” Listening to him explain it gives me the impression that the habit is real; it began discreetly indoors last year and moved outdoors when the weather permitted. It’s still unclear if other factors are at play. Pritzker declined to respond when questioned directly about GLP-1 medications, the class of weight-loss drugs that have transformed discussions about obesity in America. He responded, “I don’t care,” when asked what people might think. “Anyone doing anything good for their health — that’s a positive thing.”
There was a certain political grace to that non-answer. It’s reasonable to assume that he’s just defending his privacy. Given the already high level of interest in 2028 speculation, there may also be some calculation involved. In any case, the weight continues to drop.
What lies beneath this story is what elevates it above mere tabloid fodder. Donald Pritzker, Pritzker’s father, passed away at the age of 39 from a heart attack. JB was seven years old. That loss never truly goes away, and it shows up subtly in the way he talks about his motivation, risk profile, and doctor visits. “That does drive me,” he remarked. When a man who witnessed his father’s death at a young age begins to walk five miles before the sun fully rises, it’s reasonable to assume that at least some of this is personal.
Politics, however, coexists with everything else. Haley Barbour, a former governor of Mississippi, joked before the 2012 presidential contest that anyone who saw him drop forty pounds was either running or had cancer. The same concerns were raised by Chris Christie’s widely reported 2014 weight loss. Mike Pompeo ultimately decided not to run in 2024 after losing ninety pounds. It doesn’t take cynicism to recognize the pattern because it is sufficiently familiar.
Even Donald Trump, who is not renowned for being kind to Democratic governors, recognized the change. “I noticed he lost a little weight,” Trump said, “so maybe he has a chance.” Although that line was intended as a jab, it served as a kind of confirmation. The way the room perceives you has changed when your political opponent begins making remarks about your appearance.
Pritzker’s answer was as straightforward as usual. He referred to Trump as a bully, pointed out that the president isn’t exactly in the best physical shape, and moved on. He now has a calibrated sharpness about him. It’s really unclear if that’s deliberate or just what happens when someone feels better physically.
What is evident is that the lakefront strolls will persist, the inquiries will increase, and Illinois’s governor—trimmer, more visible, and more talked about than ever—is not taking any action to put an end to the 2028 debate. He claims he is simply strolling. Five miles. Each morning. Before everyone else is truly awake.
