10 British Comfort Food Recipes That Double as Serious Weight Gain Meals

British comfort food has a subtle genius that is rarely discussed. At least not in relation to calories. Usually, the conversation goes the other way, with a mild cultural apology for stodgy pies and heavy puddings, as if the entire nation has been cooking incorrectly for two centuries. However, a different picture begins to emerge if you spend enough time in a traditional British kitchen or sit down on a Tuesday night in October with a large bowl of shepherd’s pie. It was never intended for these dishes to be delicate. They were designed to keep people alive during arduous labor, long winters, and the kind of bone-deep cold that a thin soup just cannot cure.

This means that, when you consider it, they are practically ideal for anyone who is seriously attempting to gain weight.

Without making a lot of effort, the shepherd’s pie alone—lamb mince cooked slowly with onion, carrot, and a dash of Worcestershire sauce, then covered in a thick layer of buttered mash—can provide between 600 and 800 calories per serving. You’re getting close to a meal that a gym nutritionist might covertly approve of if you add a generous knob of butter to that potato topping, as you should. Although it’s still unclear if British cooks were familiar with the science, they were undoubtedly aware of the results. The table was packed with people.

Shepherd’s pie is transformed into Cumberland pie by covering the mash with a breadcrumb and cheese crust. It sounds excessive, and it is, but that’s kind of the point. Without any effort on your part, the additional layer provides crunch, texture, and a dependable extra hundred calories. It has been a family favorite for many years because it rewards perseverance—the more than four hours of slow cooking turn inexpensive cuts into something that seems pricey. The idea behind Lancashire hotpot is similar: sliced potatoes are layered over rich lamb and baked slowly until the liquid underneath becomes thick and glossy and the top turns golden.

In certain versions, fish pie may appear to be the lighter choice on this list. However, a traditional British fish pie, which consists of smoked haddock, white fish, and king prawns combined with a thick béchamel and floury mashed potato on top, doesn’t make any excuses. When prepared properly, each serving can easily surpass 700 calories. There is no negotiating the cream in the sauce. The butter in the mash isn’t either. There’s a feeling that contemporary recipe modifications attempt to minimize both, which is nearly always a mistake.

Toad-in-the-hole is one of those foods that may appear straightforward, but its batter actually contains a significant amount of calories. Made with eggs, flour, and full-fat milk, the Yorkshire pudding base puffs dramatically in the oven, encasing thick pork sausages in a crisp, golden shell. A full serving can surpass 900 calories without anyone reaching for a second helping when served with onion gravy and mash on the side. Even though that was obviously never the original plan, it is difficult to ignore how well this works as a post-training meal.

Once thought of as a peasant dish, faggots are dense meatballs made from pork shoulder and pig liver that are braised in a rich gravy. People who have learned that inexpensive, offal-based cooking is also, almost coincidentally, very high in protein and iron are making a quiet comeback. When paired with mashed potatoes, they embody the type of whole-food calorie density that the majority of contemporary weight-gain techniques are only now starting to comprehend.

Treacle sponge and sticky toffee pudding belong here as real contributors to a significant calorie surplus, not as afterthoughts. On its own, a large portion of sticky toffee pudding soaked in toffee sauce and served with double cream can easily provide 600 calories. Similar in density is the treacle sponge, that straightforward baked pudding with an enticing sticky base. Portion control was never the goal of British dessert design.

In what may be the most subtle way possible, rice pudding completes the list. It’s the kind of food that people remember eating as kids without really understanding why it felt so comforting. It’s baked slowly with full-fat milk and has a skin that forms across the top. Fat, sugar, slow-digesting carbs, and the unique pleasure of a warm, creamy dish served in a deep bowl are the answers. It’s not glamorous. It functions. That is sufficient in certain situations.
