Urgent Tesco Coleslaw Product Recall Sparks Allergy Fears Across the UK — Do You Have the Affected Tub at Home?

You don’t typically worry about this type of food. It’s a sandwich filler and side dish that you can easily grab on a Tuesday afternoon. However, Tesco customers who are allergic to mustard had every reason to reconsider—and act swiftly—this week.

Tesco is recalling its Finest Caesar & Smoked Bacon Coleslaw after it was discovered that some 270g packs contained Tesco Finest Four Cheese Potato Salad, an entirely different product with mustard that was not disclosed on the coleslaw label. The use-by date on the impacted tubs is September 4, 2026. It’s a simple packaging error, the kind that occurs when two products pass through the same facility at some point on a production line. However, straightforward doesn’t even begin to describe what it might mean to someone who has a severe mustard allergy.

Following the discovery of the mislabeled product, the Food Standards Agency issued an allergy alert, cautioning that anyone with a mustard allergy may be at risk for health problems. One of the 14 major allergens that must be listed on food labels in the UK is mustard. It is not a small ingredient that goes unnoticed by regulators, but rather a material that can cause reactions ranging from a minor rash to anaphylaxis. There are serious concerns about the location of the breakdown, given that it ended up in a tub marked as something completely different.

The majority of people who purchased this coleslaw might have opened it, noticed that it tasted different, and assumed that the recipe had changed. In a hurry, especially during lunch, many customers wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between a Caesar coleslaw and a four-cheese potato salad. However, for someone who is managing a food allergy, that moment of ignorance is precisely where the danger resides. It is not optional for them to read labels. It’s the trust system as a whole.

The FSA has advised anyone with a mustard allergy who has bought the product not to eat it and to return it to any Tesco store for a complete refund without a receipt. Tesco has also contacted pertinent allergy support groups to inform their members about the recall. It may seem insignificant, but that final section is crucial. To protect themselves, allergy sufferers shouldn’t have to search for a receipt, and Tesco getting that detail right is at least something.

As this develops, it’s difficult to ignore the fact that Tesco has previously issued allergy alerts related to mustard. Previous recalls involving undeclared mustard in other Tesco products, such as a stir-fry product in September of last year and a celery and nut salad in late 2025, are documented in the FSA’s own records. A packaging error every time.

The same allergen each time. A single apology and refund policy doesn’t fully address the perception that something in the production or labeling process consistently creates the same vulnerability. Whether this indicates a systemic weakness in quality control or just the statistical reality of large-scale food production is still up for debate.

Here, the larger context is also important. Since Natasha Ednan-Laperouse died in 2016, UK supermarkets have been under constant scrutiny regarding allergen labeling, which ultimately resulted in the implementation of Natasha’s Law in 2021.

These kinds of gaps were specifically intended to be filled by that legislation. However, the industry as a whole—not just Tesco—continues to experience unsettlingly frequent recalls due to unreported allergens. Similar warnings have been released in recent weeks by Asda, Waitrose, and Sainsbury’s. The legislation’s goal is correct. It is obvious that there is still potential for failure in the factory floor execution.

Tesco’s statement expressed regret for any inconvenience caused and confirmed that this recall does not affect any other products. For someone who inadvertently ingested an allergen, inconvenience might be an understatement. However, the company acted swiftly, issuing the recall notice on September 3, the day before the use-by date. This timing, at the very least, indicates that the alert system is operating as it should. It depends on your point of view whether that is comforting or just the bare minimum.

The advice is straightforward for anyone who recently purchased a 270g tub of Tesco Finest Caesar & Smoked Bacon Coleslaw: look for a mustard allergy in your home, check the use-by date, and return it if you’re unsure. Refunds are assured. For people with allergies, the risk is not worth using a condiment.
