Can You Put a Fray Bentos Pie in an Air Fryer? We Tried It So You Don’t Have To

A certain type of comfort food from Britain doesn’t require reimagining. All it requires is heating. For decades, Fray Bentos pies have been quietly displayed on store shelves, requiring only an oven, a shelf, and roughly 30 minutes from the buyer. The round tin with its characteristic pastry lid has served as a sort of culinary shorthand for getting through the week for a generation of students, single-person households, and people who just couldn’t be bothered.

However, when air fryers began to appear on every kitchen counter in the nation, something changed. People started asking the obvious question all of a sudden. The one that appears surprisingly frequently in Reddit threads and Facebook groups. What happens if a Fray Bentos pie is placed in an air fryer?

In a nutshell, the answer is yes. Unexpectedly, the longer response is more fascinating. Most common basket-style air fryers can easily accommodate the tin if their internal basket diameter is at least 20 cm. The plastic film is removed, the pastry lid is exposed, and the tin is left intact, just like it would be in an oven. Transferring it to anything else is not necessary. Under circulating hot air, which is basically all an air fryer does—moving heat quickly in a small area rather than filling an entire oven cavity—the metal tin is completely safe.

The majority of those who have tried it settle on 180°C to 200°C for 20 to 25 minutes. According to dozens of social media videos and forum posts, the outcomes are typically truly remarkable. Compared to the oven version, which occasionally leaves the top looking a little pale and soft if the temperature isn’t quite right, the pastry turns out golden and noticeably crisper. Hot circulating air strikes the exposed pastry more evenly and directly. It has a satisfying crunch that isn’t always present in the oven version.

It’s important to note that at these temperatures, the filling properly heats through. If you give it the entire cooking time, the occasional worry about whether the filling in the center gets hot enough seems largely unfounded. While the air fryer handles the top, the sides and bottom of the tin conduct heat. It’s not a difficult procedure. A pie in a tin. It heats all the way through.

The amount of energy that the entire system saves is intriguing. An air fryer operating at a lower setting for 20 minutes uses significantly less electricity than a full-size oven preheated to 200°C and running for 30 minutes. That difference adds up over time for a single-person meal, which is basically what a Fray Bentos pie is, especially considering how much attention household energy bills have received lately. Some of the resurgence of interest in this product may be motivated as much by pragmatic economics as by nostalgia.

The pie itself is unchanged. The odd thing is that. The air fryer is a real change in home cooking, but Fray Bentos hasn’t changed much. It’s the same shape, tin, and slightly dense pastry that, depending on how you feel about it, either reassures you or doesn’t. It’s similar to witnessing something from two entirely different eras appear in the same kitchen at the same time when you watch the two come together.

Making sure the tin fits before you begin is the one important consideration, which is sometimes forgotten in the excitement to give it a try. The entire diameter of the tin will not fit in some small air fryer models. It’s not particularly exciting advice to check the basket dimensions before cooking, but it’s something to be aware of before you find yourself standing there at dinnertime with a pie that won’t fit.

Putting a Fray Bentos pie in the air fryer is strangely satisfying for anyone who grew up eating them. Not revolutionary. Not transformative. Crisper pastry, quicker cooking, less energy, and greater convenience are just a few improvements over what was already good. That’s sufficient in certain situations.
