Prince Naseem Weight Gain: The Real Story Behind the Transformation Nobody Saw Coming

A version of the Prince Naseem story concludes satisfactorily in 2002 with a post-fight pledge to return and a points victory over Manuel Calvo at London Arena. That return never materialized. Instead, a life so different from the featherweight showman of the 1990s emerged gradually and then all at once, to the point where people stopped scrolling when they saw pictures of Naseem Hamed in London ten years after his last bout.

Hamed was a fighter who trained for years at Brendan Ingle’s Wincobank gym in Sheffield, doing things with his hands and feet that no one else was doing. At his best, he fought at about nine stone, or 126 pounds, featherweight. He was a 5-foot-4 southpaw with nearly unbelievable knockout power for the weight class. Of his 36 victories, 31 were via stoppage. His ring entrances, which included flying carpet and somersaults over the top rope, gave the impression that a Sheffield boxing gym and a Vegas magic show had collided. No one hit as well as he did, and no one looked quite like him.

The body usually notices when the discipline of elite sport vanishes overnight. Featherweight fighters engage in a sort of ongoing food negotiation, eating just enough to train, restricting just enough to gain weight, and adhering to a schedule that most people would find truly taxing. At age 28, Hamed retired. The appetite, developed over ten years, doesn’t go away when the training does. Even though the equation isn’t very complex, people are still taken aback by the magnitude of the change when they see it.

This is an earlier episode that is worth comprehending. Hamed suffered a severe hand break during the August 2000 fight with Augie Sanchez. Following surgery, six months were spent away from the gym. He reportedly put on 35 pounds during that time alone. That is before middle age, retirement, and any family issues. When the structure of professional training is taken away from a body that has been expending massive amounts of energy for years, it provides a sense of how quickly the weight appears.

Even though the complete picture is still unknown, it’s important to acknowledge that the family dispute has become part of the larger story surrounding his weight gain. Ali, Naseem’s brother, has publicly stated that the physical change was largely caused by the stress of a £12 million family feud, which appears to have been related to a property investment Hamed made for his parents that became a major source of conflict following his mother’s death in 2020. In 2022, Ali told The Sun, “He’s turned in on himself and has just eaten and eaten.” It’s difficult to tell from the outside whether that’s a full story or just one brother’s interpretation of what happened. Families are complex in ways that are rarely well-represented in tabloid articles.

It’s evident that Hamed, who is currently 51, has chosen to avoid the spotlight. He’s not doing TV interviews, he’s not making weekly appearances at ringside events, and he’s not setting himself up for a return or a career as a pundit. Hamed has reportedly been spotted cheering on his son Aadam, who is currently a professional fighter with a flawless record. Hamed has talked about how hard it was to watch the biopic Giant, which was released earlier this year and tells the story of his ascent. Pierce Brosnan plays Ingle.

For a fighter who was genuinely one of the most captivating athletes British sport produced in the 1990s, the weight gain tends to dominate discussions about where he ended up, which feels a little reductionist. Retirement from sports has odd effects on people. While some people find structure in coaching or commentary, others completely reject it. After navigating a private life that has been anything but quiet behind the scenes, Hamed seems to have opted for the latter. The body reflects what has happened over the years. That’s just what happens to people; it’s not a scandal.
