Compliments Brand Smashed Chicken Burgers Hit With Second CFIA Recall in August

Opening your freezer and wondering if what’s inside is what it claims to be is a bit unsettling. This week, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency extended an ongoing recall of Compliments brand Smashed 100% Chicken Burgers, citing an undeclared egg as the cause. This is precisely the situation that many Canadian households found themselves in.

August 2026 saw the removal of the same product twice. Packages with particular lot numbers, best-before dates, and universal product codes were the focus of the initial recall, which was released on August 7. It appeared to be contained. The kind of thing that a business recognizes, deals with, and stealthily moves past. However, the second notice, which was released on Monday, was much broader.

The revised recall from the CFIA now applies to “all codes where egg is not declared on the label.” That statement is significantly different. It implies that the labeling problem wasn’t unique to one production run. Additionally, the distinction is crucial for anyone who has an egg allergy, which can range from slightly uncomfortable to actually dangerous.

It’s not some obscure off-brand. It is available at Sobeys, FreshCo, Foodland, and Safeway, which together account for a sizeable portion of Canadian grocery shopping. It’s likely that the Smashed 100% Chicken Burgers gained popularity because they sound like the kind of product that food marketing has perfected, with an air of simplicity and quality. Everything is chicken. Nothing is concealed. Except, apparently, egg.

The CFIA has categorized the recall as Class Two, which means that there is “a moderate risk that consuming the food may lead to short-term or non-life-threatening health problems.” The public is somewhat reassured by that framing. However, moderate risk is still risk for those with severe egg allergies, and the wording fails to adequately convey the anxiety that arises when you realize you’ve already consumed something that wasn’t properly labeled.

It’s important to note that the agency claimed that at the time of the recall notice, no reactions had been reported. That is truly positive news. Wider exposure may have been avoided by the first recall, which was early and restricted. Or maybe people who are impacted haven’t yet linked this product to their symptoms. It’s difficult to tell.

When these alerts circulate quickly through news feeds, it’s simple to miss a larger pattern. In Canada, food recalls occur occasionally, and one of the main reasons is always allergen mislabeling. Nuts, eggs, and milk are common offenders—not necessarily because businesses are negligent, but rather because shared production lines and reformulated goods create significant complexity at scale. However, a regulatory notice by itself is insufficient to address concerns regarding quality control procedures raised by a second recall for the same product within the same month.

The CFIA’s advice is simple: avoid using, distributing, selling, or serving the impacted product. Customers can contact the agency directly by phone or email if they would like additional information. The Government of Canada accepts reports from anyone who thinks they may have had a health reaction.

Before deciding on dinner for tonight, it might be worthwhile to spend a little more time at the freezer door reading the label—really read it.
