Nationwide Indus Foods Chicken Recall Hits Class I — And Nobody Got Sick Yet

A federal recall notice now has Jyothi Yerramreddy’s phone number, a 512 area code, and an open invitation to call with questions at the bottom. You can learn most of what you need to know about this thing’s size from that detail. No crisis management firm, no corporate communications desk, no pre-written legal statement. Just an email address ending in gmail.com and a phone number in Austin, Texas.

On August 17, the Food Safety and Inspection Service declared that approximately 1,626 pounds of ready-to-eat pickled goat and chicken were being recalled by Indus Foods LLC, operating under the name Gangothri Foods. Four products, each in an 8-ounce glass jar: gongura, goat, and chicken pickles, with the dark red ones flecked with sorrel leaf. There were no reports of illness. That wasn’t the issue.

The issue was that the jars never made it through federal inspection, which is a requirement that no one can avoid when it comes to meat and poultry. Compared to the recall categories that dominate news cycles, this one is quieter and possibly more unsettling. Regulators can track down a pathogen, count cases, and create a map of the states that are impacted. The only thing missing in this case is a stamp on the label, an inspector’s file, and documentation of the conditions under which those jars were filled over fifteen months, from January 2025 to May of this year.

It appears dry on paper, but FSIS discovered it during routine surveillance, suggesting that someone somewhere saw a label that shouldn’t have been there. It was assigned to Class I, the agency’s highest tier, which is reserved for situations where there is a plausible risk of major health consequences.

There are no illnesses that have been confirmed. The majority of the public’s confusion stems from the discrepancy between the severity rating and the actual body count, which is difficult to describe in a headline.

The two-year shelf life makes things much more difficult. Meats that have been pickled are meant to sit. In a kitchen cabinet in Edison, Fremont, or suburban Atlanta, a jar purchased in the spring of 2025 might still be unopened and tucked behind the rice, waiting for a weekend when someone wants something sharp to go with curd rice. Seldom do recall notices make it to those cabinets. They make their way to newsrooms, aggregators, and, three days later, a cousin’s Facebook post.

It’s important to state clearly that small producers are in a real bind. Built decades ago around industrial slaughterhouses rather than small-scale pickle businesses, federal meat inspection is costly and labor-intensive. Many of these companies expand from farmers’ markets to online ordering to nationwide distribution without fully realizing that regulations have changed somewhere beneath them.

It’s not a defense at all. The inspection system is designed to stop uninspected meat from entering the country’s market, and the fact that no one seems to have been harmed reads more like luck than confirmation. Even so, a setup that only reveals this through sporadic sweeps after 1,626 pounds have already shipped has something worthwhile.

Nobody is calmed by the larger background. In addition to the Taylor Farms salmonella recall and a Walmart soup recall affecting 29 states, this year has already seen outbreak investigations linked to iceberg lettuce, blueberries, eggs, and jalapeños. Recall fatigue is now quantifiable because consumers are asked to check labels so frequently. One’s focus wanes. Warnings blend.

At least the instructions are easy to follow. Don’t serve it or eat it. Either return it to the store where you purchased it or double-bag and dispose of it. Distributors and restaurants with inventory have been informed of this. Anyone with inquiries can contact the USDA meat hotline or the company directly.

It remains to be seen if that truly clears the product. Pickles are kept. That is the whole purpose of pickles. The only thing preventing some of these jars from ending up on a dinner table is if someone happens to look at the label and notice what isn’t printed there. Some of these jars will remain unnoticed well into 2027, long after anyone remembers reading about this.
