McDonald’s Discontinues Pumpkin Spice Latte After 13 Years — And Fans Are Not Happy

Walking into a McDonald’s in late August and not seeing an orange-tinted cup with the words “Pumpkin Spice” anywhere in sight is a subtly unsettling experience. That cup was as dependable as the first cool breeze of the season for thirteen years—possibly more so, given that McDonald’s never lied and the weather often does. Up until now.

The Pumpkin Spice Latte, which had become something of an unofficial seasonal mascot for millions of Americans, was officially discontinued by McDonald’s this fall. In August 2026, the chain announced that pumpkin spice would not be available in any of its fall beverage options, either hot or iced. It is replaced by a line of Caramel Apple Pie drinks that come in frappe, hot latte, iced latte, and iced coffee varieties. These drinks are finished with salted caramel whipped cream and what the brand refers to as apple pie crumbles.

Someone may have said, “Enough,” pointing to a slide displaying data on pumpkin spice fatigue in a McDonald’s corporate meeting room. Every brand, from candle manufacturers to potato chip manufacturers, has so thoroughly colonized the flavor—cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, that whole warming cascade—that it might have just run out. McDonald’s appears to agree, as they are placing a wager on caramel apples to win the season.

In 2016, the Pumpkin Spice Latte made its national debut at McDonald’s restaurants, although it had previously been available in several McCafé varieties. That’s ten years of seasonal loyalty from patrons who connected the beverage to a specific type of ritual comfort as well as fall. September drive-through lines. Rising steam from paper cups. The unique delight of something that appears only once a year and vanishes before you’re ready.

“We chose Caramel Apple Pie because it offers a fresh take on the familiar tastes of fall — and one we think fans will fall in love with,” a McDonald’s representative said in a cautious and, to be honest, somewhat scripted explanation of the choice. It remains to be seen if that confidence is merited. Although caramel apples are a legitimate fall flavor (think harvest festivals, county fairs, and the waxy red variety on a stick), they have never quite gained the cultural significance that pumpkin spice has amassed over two decades of widespread marketing.

It’s interesting to note that this year, McDonald’s isn’t the only company moving away from the orange spice. Dunkin’ has added tiramisu as an alternative to pumpkin, presumably realizing that not everyone enjoys drinking something that smells like a Yankee candle. Observing these actions gives the impression that the fast food industry is gradually attempting to wean customers off of a flavor trend that peaked around 2019 and has been coasting on inertia ever since.

Nevertheless, forecasting the demise of pumpkin spice has become a yearly custom, and the taste has outlived all of the obituaries that have been written about it. Starbucks’ Pumpkin Spice Latte, which may have sparked the entire cultural phenomenon back in 2003, is here to stay. McDonald’s break from the trend only takes one player off the field; it doesn’t put an end to pumpkin spice season.

However, there is something noteworthy about the replacement’s specificity. Caramel Apple Pie is a purposeful, specific flavor choice that evokes something tactile and nostalgic rather than a hazy nod to fall. Apple pie crumbles on a latte is a novel enough concept that it might work—not because it’s revolutionary, but because it’s tangible. You can visualize it. Before placing your order, you can practically taste it.

It’s genuinely unclear if McDonald’s patrons will embrace Caramel Apple Pie with the same seasonal fervor they brought to pumpkin spice. Transferring loyalty after thirteen years is challenging. However, fast food menus are always an experiment, and this one is at least intriguing—a chain large enough to create trends deciding to deviate from the most obvious option while everyone else is still reaching for the pumpkin.
