Lucy Alexander Weight Gain – How Menopause Changed Everything for the TV Star

While some TV hosts, like Lucy Alexander, walk onto a sun-drenched terrace in their fifties, their confidence only recently restored and a hot flush threatening, others quietly fade away as the years begin to show. Nevertheless, they continue to perform their jobs. It’s difficult not to sense that something subtly important has been happening as you watch her navigate the last few years—not just a career change, but a sincere reckoning with a body that was changing in ways she hadn’t fully anticipated.

It was almost by accident that Lucy Alexander’s weight gain entered the public discourse. She didn’t start a wellness company or write a book about it. Rather, she brought it up the way real people do: openly, in the middle of the interview, as part of a longer narrative about menopause, anxiety, and a job offer she almost declined. When she appeared in the media in 2023, she candidly admitted that she had gained a few pounds while coping with menopausal symptoms. She did not use the kind of cautious PR framing that typically shields these admissions from celebrities. Compared to most, that honesty landed differently.

The perimenopause is not a gentle announcement. Alexander, who is currently 54 years old, experienced hot flashes, exhaustion, a frozen shoulder that she has discussed on social media, and a certain depressed mood that is hard to distinguish from grief; she has also talked about losing a loved one during this time in her life. One of the most prevalent and least talked about signs of perimenopause is weight gain, which is frequently disregarded or linked to lifestyle changes rather than hormonal changes. Alexander might not have anticipated the physical toll, and she might not have anticipated having to consider it when making a career decision. However, she did.

She was hesitant at first when Channel 4 offered her a regular spot on A Place in the Sun. She has publicly stated that she questioned whether a woman of her age, who is perimenopausal and has heat sensitivity, had any business hosting a property show that was shot in a warm climate. She remembered thinking, “Maybe this is just for younger people.” Any woman who has stood in front of a mirror in her early fifties and felt suddenly uneasy about the reflection can probably relate to this thought. The intriguing thing is that she overcame it. A cooling scarf from her friend Ruth Langsford, the choice to just let the all-male film crew know when she needed a moment, and a silent internal discussion about what she owed herself at this point in her life.

This is more than just the weight fluctuation of one presenter. Television discussions about women’s bodies have been evolving, albeit slowly, unevenly, and still not quickly enough. Alexander is an example of a woman in her fifties creating momentum instead of accepting decline, a topic that isn’t discussed enough. After leaving Homes Under the Hammer in 2016, she worked as a professional for a number of years before landing what she calls a dream role at the perfect time. She stated, “I feel like my career is having a second wind in my 50s,” without using a performative tone.

Even though they slowed her down, the weight gain, hot flashes, and depressed mood she described having upon arriving at a wellness retreat didn’t stop her. She seems more interested in being open about the true cost of continuing to appear than in putting on a carefree front for the camera. It’s not as common as it seems. By the time they reach an audience, the majority of public figures curate a version of struggle that has already been resolved. Alexander’s resonates because it feels more like work in progress.

She isn’t trying to hide the fact that she is 54 years old. She told the Daily Mail, “I don’t look like I did in my 40s,” adding that she had to put in a lot of effort to boost her self-confidence. Without resorting to melodrama, that statement likely conveys more about what it’s like to be a woman on British television than a hundred opinion pieces could. The industry has a short memory for what women have created and a long memory for how they look. Alexander appears to have made the decision that she won’t have to deal with it; instead, she will continue to travel, give presentations, and show up wearing her cool scarf and her newly acquired self-assurance. And for some reason, that’s sufficient.
