Tyrese Haliburton Weight Gain Explained: Shingles, Medication Side Effects, and Eight Weeks of Misery

Watching one of the NBA’s most fluid point guards cheer for his team rather than play for them while sitting courtside in glasses and appearing noticeably heavier is somewhat startling. This past season, Tyrese Haliburton has had to deal with that. Additionally, the internet didn’t wait for context when pictures of the Indiana Pacers star appeared on social media in early 2026. Seldom does it.

What You’ll Find in This Article

    • The real medical reasons behind Tyrese Haliburton’s noticeable weight gain — beyond what social media assumed.
    • How facial shingles and Achilles recovery combined to derail one of the NBA’s brightest young stars for an entire season.
    • What’s next for Haliburton as he returns to full training and prepares for the 2026-27 NBA season.

The jokes came out quickly. The moniker “Haliburger” quickly gained traction in basketball-related Reddit and Twitter threads. When a young star was laid off due to an injury, people assumed the worst. The truth proved to be much more difficult to accept and, to be honest, much more complex.

During Game 7 of the 2025 NBA Finals, Haliburton tore his right Achilles tendon. That would have been sufficient for a full year on its own.

One of the most severe injuries a professional athlete can sustain is an Achilles rupture; there are no shortcuts, a lengthy recovery period, and a heavy psychological burden. He admitted on a podcast in January that he had gained thirty pounds from his playing weight during that time, making light of the fact that he had been “drowning his sorrows in cookies and ice cream.” It was self-deprecating. Even relatable. The majority of patients recuperating from major surgery aren’t precisely meeting their macros.

The shingles followed. Haliburton was diagnosed with a severe case of the virus during the NBA All-Star break in February, but it was on his face rather than his torso, where it is more frequently observed. For the first two weeks, his eye was practically swollen shut. His face was covered in a rash. A portion of his eyebrow fell out. He explained to reporters that the only reason he had been wearing spectacles on the bench was to prevent himself from touching his face.

“I’ve been taking unbelievable amounts of medication to try to get rid of it,” Haliburton stated during his exit interview in April. It’s a small, specific detail, but it speaks volumes about how devastating the experience was. “It has not been successful. I’ve clearly gained weight and appear somewhat larger as a result of it.” By then, he had been managing nerve pain for two months, with mostly bad days interspersed with occasional good ones. “This has sucked,” he uttered.

Tirese Haliburton’s weight gain gained popularity due to his appearance in sideline pictures. However, those pictures were unable to depict eight weeks of facial shingles, rounds of intense medication going through his body, or the fact that he was recovering from one of the more severe joint injuries in professional sports at the same time. Like cropped photos, the optics were deceptive.

The larger irony in this situation is difficult to ignore. Just one season ago, 26-year-old Haliburton—a two-time All-Star—led Indiana to their first NBA Finals appearance in 25 years. His Achilles tendon was allegedly weakened before it completely failed in Game 7, and he played through the Finals with injuries. And instead of being a triumphant tale of recovery, the ensuing year became something truly challenging.

In NBA circles, there’s a belief that understanding the Pacers’ season—a franchise-worst 19-63 record—requires taking into consideration how much the team missed him. He was their floor general, their offensive engine, and the player who drives their entire system. He wasn’t simply absent.

Haliburton was cleared to play unrestricted five-on-five basketball as of his exit interview. The burden will be lifted. Even tho shingles is terrible, it doesn’t define a career. He responded to the ridicule on social media with more poise than most, taking it head-on and not appearing offended. Although it shouldn’t come as a surprise from a player who has faced hardship in the past, it’s still noteworthy.

There are still a few months until the 2026–2027 season. How quickly his body reacts when full training resumes is still unknown. If nothing else, tho, the past year has served as a reminder that there is typically a longer story—one that doesn’t fit neatly into a caption—behind the viral images and short nicknames.
