Claressa Shields Weight Loss – How the GWOAT Dropped 38 Pounds in 14 Weeks to Reclaim Her Crown

On August 15, Claressa Shields appeared as though she had won a private wager with herself when she entered the State Farm Arena in Atlanta. She weighed 160 pounds. She had been 198 pounds fourteen weeks prior.

That weighs 38 pounds. Absent. Just under four months from now. She then went out and stopped Kaye Scott in the sixth round to reclaim the WBC and WBA middleweight titles, just twenty-four hours after stepping on the scales in a glittering nude leotard and cream feather coat, doing what Shields always does at weigh-ins, which is to remind everyone she’s also a show.

It’s difficult to ignore that for a little while. It is not a water cut to weigh thirty-eight pounds. It takes more than a few weeks of strict diet and increased exercise. A 31-year-old body that had been living comfortably at heavyweight would be seriously challenged by such a complete physical rebuild.

Shields didn’t act any differently. “After the fight, she told ESPN, ‘This was a really hard camp.” “I lost thirty-eight pounds. I dropped from 198 pounds to 160. I think this is the most disciplined I’ve been since the Olympics.” That comparison holds significance for someone who, as a teenager, won consecutive gold medals at the Olympics. It’s not language used in marketing. It sounds like the kind of thing you say when you’ve truly caught yourself off guard.

It wasn’t an impulsive decision to drop back to middleweight. There were just no more significant fights at 175 pounds, which is the heavyweight ceiling for women. Shadasia Green had upset Savanna Marshall, the only opponent to ever truly challenge Shields in eighteen professional fights. Green was then defeated by Lani Daniels, whom Shields had already dominated. All around her, the division had quietly crumbled. Targets like Welsh sensation Lauren Price and Mikaela Mayer were sitting at middleweight, and Shields, who was fiercely competitive, went where the fights were.

However, surviving the weight cut and wanting the fights are two completely different things. Shields freely acknowledged to The Ring that the procedure was “extremely difficult,” saying, “it’s not easy, and that’s why I went to 175.” She was being open about what it takes to compete at 160 when your natural walking weight has crept into the high 190s, not trying to avoid the weight class. Boxing doesn’t always receive that level of transparency from its stars.

Shields documented this specific transformation without attempting to make it appear effortless, which is what made it truly watchable. She joked that someone had suggested her abs were artificial intelligence (AI) while flaunting her six-pack in an Instagram Live that went viral during fight week. Then she admitted the trade-offs with the same casual candor. “Y’all know I lost my weight, but my butt did get a little smaller,” she replied. “But it’s still there.” An elite athlete at the top of her game acknowledging in public that a weight loss altered her body in ways she didn’t fully anticipate is almost refreshing.

The difficult part was over by the time she managed to climb through the ropes against Scott. She watched the champion stumble into the ropes after rocking Scott with a left hook in the sixth, and she continued to apply pressure until Scott’s corner called. Two more belts. She used the term “history” herself, fully aware of its meaning.

Shields, who has won titles at super middleweight, light middleweight, middleweight, super welterweight, and heavyweight and is 18-0 in five weight classes, is now aiming for Lauren Price in early 2027. To meet her, Price would have to go up two divisions. On paper, it seems like a simple fight, but then you remember what Shields just endured to get here, and it seems like she’s willing to do it again.

One version of this story is told only in terms of knockdowns and numbers. However, it’s quite another to watch Claressa Shields lose 38 pounds, arrive at a weigh-in wearing feathers and gold heels, stop a champion in six rounds, and then joke about her smaller posterior. It’s a career that never seems to settle.
