How Long to Air Fry Birds Eye Potato Waffles — And Why You’ve Been Doing It Wrong

Birds Eye potato waffles, those stiff, grid-stamped frozen slabs that have been on British dinner plates since 1981, have an almost nostalgic quality. For the majority of their lives, they were an oven food. They would be placed on a baking tray, baked at 220°C, left unattended for 15 minutes, and the result would be a pale interior with slightly overdone edges. It was alright. It was successful. However, it wasn’t very thrilling.

When the air fryer was introduced, the entire computation was altered.

How long do you actually air fry Birds Eye potato waffles? This is a straightforward question that people are asking these days, especially those who recently purchased an air fryer and are going through their freezer to find old favorites. It turns out that the answer is between 8 and 10 minutes at 180 to 200 degrees Celsius. That’s all. Avoid using oil. No drama in advance. Don’t turn them every five minutes like nervous parents at a school play.

The fact that Birds Eye’s own packaging now includes air fryer instructions, at least for their 4-pack and 10-pack, indicates how seriously the frozen food industry is taking this change in home cooking. According to their official instructions, you should preheat the air fryer to 180°C for about three and a half minutes, put up to two waffles in the basket, turn them once halfway through, and then let them stand for a minute after cooking. This set of guidelines is cautious and conservative, as one might anticipate from a company that oversees thousands of different models of air fryers.

Most people actually go a little looser and a little higher. Depending on personal preference and how aggressively their specific machine operates, home cooks on Facebook recipe groups, food blogs, and cycling forums typically agree on 200°C for 8 to 10 minutes. A user’s “perfectly golden” may be another’s “slightly too chewy,” and the way air fryers circulate heat differs greatly from that of traditional ovens. Although 8 minutes at 180°C falls firmly in the middle of practically all recommendations, there isn’t really a universal answer in this case.

The outcome is what no one seems to contest. The texture is very different from an oven-baked waffle; it is crisper all over, not just around the edges, and has that rich golden hue that gives food the appearance of being carefully cooked rather than just heated through. There is an almost architectural crispness to the grid pattern. To be honest, it’s difficult to ignore how much better they look.

Some people are surprised to learn that no oil is required. Adding more oil to the basket would only make the Birds Eye potato waffles greasy and possibly uneven because they come pre-oiled from the factory. Unlike grilling, which tends to color the surface while leaving the inside softer than ideal, the air fryer’s circulating heat does the work on its own and produces a more consistent result.

It is important to discuss capacity. Although the official Birds Eye guidelines recommend that no more than two waffles be placed in the air fryer basket at once, most people are able to handle four waffles at a time as long as they are arranged flat and do not overlap. You can quickly feed a hungry group by stacking them to get crispy tops and steamed middles.

Serving recommendations haven’t evolved significantly since childhood. There’s a reason why baked beans and grated cheddar continue to be the most popular combination: the potato’s inherent neutrality is countered by the richness of the beans and the salt of the cheese in a way that is truly satisfying. Although some people load theirs more intricately, the traditional combination still works.

It’s possible that the air fryer has just allowed people to start caring about food again after they had begun to take it for granted. Waffles made with potatoes were always handy. Apparently, they are now worth discussing as well.
