Dylan Dreyer Asked Craig Melvin If He’s on Ozempic Live on TV — and It Got Awkward Fast

There’s a certain type of television moment that no one really anticipates—the kind where something said off-camera ends up back on screen and everyone is suddenly a little uneasy, pretending it’s funny while simultaneously meaning every word. On September 24, Dylan Dreyer’s quiet aside to Craig Melvin during a commercial break on the 3rd Hour of Today turned into what may have been the most genuinely human exchange the morning show has produced in months.

The segment itself was rather standard; it examined how fast-food restaurants have begun to modify their menus to serve patrons GLP-1 weight loss injections, a class of medications that includes Ozempic and Wegovy and has essentially changed the way Americans view eating and body weight in the last two years. This story, which is a part of the larger cultural moment surrounding these drugs that doesn’t seem to be slowing down, has been covered extensively by Today. However, what transpired after the cameras were turned back on was most likely not scripted by the producers.

Al Roker, who has a history of not letting uncomfortable situations go unnoticed, turned to Dreyer with barely disguised laughter. “Do you want to mention what you asked Craig during the story?” Like a teacher calling on a pupil who had whispered something in the back row, he said it. To her credit, Dreyer remained unflinching. “I asked if you did the shot,” she said directly to Melvin. “I did.” You felt that I was passing judgment. I felt like everyone I know is on it, so I was just asking.

Melvin’s response fell somewhere between genuine amusement and mock offense. “I took it as maybe Craig should be on the shot,” he remarked, arching his eyebrows in that specific manner he uses to convey mild indignation as opposed to genuine irritation. It’s difficult to ignore the fact that the line made people laugh because it contained a hint of truth.

The back-and-forth that ensued felt particularly unrehearsed because it most likely was. Melvin stated unequivocally, “I have lost some weight,” in response to Roker’s observation that he had recently lost weight. I am aware. If anything, his lack of elaboration increased people’s attention. Dreyer continued to defend herself by saying she was merely curious and not passing judgment. With theatrical incredulity, Melvin retorted, “Assume?! “I sit next to you every day — for years!” Dreyer essentially defended herself by saying that she merely makes remarks. Which tracks, to be honest.

The line that cut through everything was delivered by Roker. With the timing of someone who has been doing live television since before some of his colleagues were born, he turned to face the camera and said, “Mommy and Daddy are fighting.” Within an hour, the clip began to circulate online, the studio laughed, and the segment came to an end.

The GLP-1 question itself isn’t particularly intriguing at this point. It showed how commonplace the discussion of these drugs has become. Dreyer was trying to make Melvin feel uncomfortable, so she didn’t ask. “Everyone I know seems to be on one,” she said, which is why she asked. That’s just Tuesday; it’s no longer gossip. The fact that the question still caused obvious awkwardness reveals something about our cultural state: it’s open enough for someone to ask, but not quite open enough for anyone to respond.

Melvin never acknowledged or denied taking a GLP-1 drug. He admitted that he had lost weight. It’s a little surprising that none of the main Today anchors have openly discussed their personal relationship with these drugs, given how much the show has covered this subject. That’s most likely intentional. However, Dreyer’s query and the fact that Roker broadcast it right away imply that the distinction between what is said off-camera and what is broadcast is becoming increasingly hazy.

Even though no one acknowledges it, there’s a feeling that moments like this one are what morning television does best. The unguarded moments when actual people who collaborate on a daily basis momentarily forget that the cameras are on, rather than the pre-planned segments or the celebrity interviews.
