A.Vogel Ltd E. Coli Recall: The Red Clover Seeds Sitting in Your Kitchen Could Put You in Hospital

Shiga toxin-producing E. coli, or STEC, was found in Rapunzel bioSnacky Das Original Red Clover Seeds for Sprouts and Seedlings, so A.Vogel Ltd had to quickly recall the seeds.

The 30g packs that are being harmed have a batch code of 11293 and a best-before date of December 2028. Part of what makes this recall so important is that the products have a long shelf life; these aren’t products with short expiration dates that people would naturally throw away soon. Someone could have bought a package weeks ago, put it in a kitchen drawer, and planned to use it in a few months. Many people in the UK may already have that package, which is sitting quietly next to the lentils and dried herbs.

On August 10, 2026, the Food Standards Agency sent out a formal notice telling people not to grow or eat the seeds, sprouts, or seedlings in any way. There is a big risk. An STEC infection can lead to severe diarrhea, sometimes with blood, as well as severe abdominal pain. In the worst cases, it can lead to hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a disease that attacks the kidneys and can be fatal. Even worse, these are not just hypothetical worst-case scenarios. People have died in different countries over the past 20 years because of outbreaks linked to sprouting seeds. Broccoli and other bacteria can easily get into sprouts because they are grown in warm, damp conditions without being cooked.

After the recall, a Rapunzel representative said they were sorry, expressed regret, and promised to fix the problem. It wouldn’t be fair to read too much into the language because those words are used all the time in this situation. But there is a good question that should be thought about: how does STEC get into an organic sprouting seed product in the first place? Most likely, the contamination starts with the seeds and could happen while they are growing, harvesting, or processing. Still, it’s not clear exactly when this batch became tainted, and that’s a problem for people who regularly buy similar products.

The FSA has confirmed that point-of-sale notices are being put up in all stores that sell the product. People who have already bought it are being told to return it to the store where they bought it to get their money back in full. People who have symptoms, especially diarrhea that is severe or bloody, should not go to work, school, or childcare for at least 48 hours after their symptoms go away. This is to keep others from getting the bacteria.

At this point, it’s hard not to see the irony. When it comes to healthy foods, red clover seeds for sprouting at home are right up there. When people grow these on their windowsills, they usually care about nutrition rather than contamination. Of course, STEC doesn’t care about that difference. It doesn’t matter to the bacteria whether the product is organic or promoted as healthy. Watching this recall happen is a reminder, not the first time, that food that is sold as “fresh and natural” comes with its own microbial risks that would normally be gone after cooking.

The recall affects all of England, Wales, and Scotland. Food Standards Scotland also sent out an alert. It’s simple advice if you have batch 11293 at home: don’t grow it, don’t eat it, and return it. A STEC-contaminated seed is never safe to eat, no matter how much you rinse or prepare it.
