Zoe Slater Is Back — And Twitter Has Opinions About Her Weight Gain That Say More About Us Than Her

When she first entered Albert Square, she was sixteen years old. Just a teenager acting like a teenager, complete with a leather jacket, smudged eyeliner, and that now-famous growl directed at Jessie Wallace from across a small living room. As Zoe Slater, Michelle Ryan became one of the few soap opera characters who truly made a lasting impression on the country. She returned twenty years later. And in a matter of hours, the whole event had already been reduced to a discussion about her weight in some online forums.

Watching that happen makes it difficult to avoid feeling uneasy.

Almost instantly, the number of searches increased. The June 2025 episode of “Zoe EastEnders weight gain” quickly became popular on social media. Screenshots from 2000 next to freeze-frames from 2025, analyzed with the kind of clinical detachment typically reserved for crime scene analysis, were common in Facebook groups devoted to the soap opera. Some commentators were so direct that they almost seemed cruel. It was “not natural” for a 40-year-old woman to look different from how she did at sixteen, according to a widely shared and criticized post. The reasoning there is so illogical that it nearly goes back to being humorous. Nearly.

Naturally, what really occurred was that a woman grew older. Michelle Ryan left EastEnders at the age of 21 and pursued a Hollywood career for years. She worked on a number of projects that kept her employed but not always in the spotlight, such as the Bionic Woman reboot in the United States and Jekyll on the BBC. Two decades later, she returned to one of Britain’s most popular soap operas. Her expression has changed. Her physique has evolved. Instead of being a teenager captured on camera in a studio at the beginning of the millennium, she is now an adult. Time is just the space between those two pictures.

But what’s remarkable is how targeted the cruelty became. It’s inevitable that people would notice that she looked different, but most viewers were just happy that she was back. It was that some commentators appeared to be genuinely offended. As if Zoe Slater owed them a specific silhouette. As if by living in a body that mirrored her real life, Michelle Ryan had broken some unwritten agreement.

There was a pushback from the larger media. The same culture that body-shames women for gaining weight also makes fun of them for cosmetic procedures, leaving no version of aging that is acceptable, according to articles defending Ryan that appeared in several publications. Women in public life are always navigating this loop, and returning soap opera actresses seem to exacerbate it.

Additionally, there is something noteworthy about the character herself. As written in 2025, Zoe Slater arrives in Walford like a weather system and is disorganized and emotionally broken. She shouldn’t have a polished appearance. There is still the smudged eyeliner. There is still a lot of intensity. If anything, Ryan’s portrayal was said to have the weight—both literally and figuratively—of someone who has had a difficult life, which was precisely what the plot demanded.

Some of the most negative responses might be more indicative of unresolved nostalgia than of Michelle Ryan’s appearance. A certain kind of soap opera fandom requires its icons to be preserved in their most iconic state, unaffected by everyday life. The response may be disproportionate when that delusion is broken.

There is no doubt that the discourse surrounding her return was uglier than it had to be. Michelle Ryan contributed twenty years of her early life to EastEnders, helped create one of the show’s most enduring plots, and then returned to do it once more. That is worthy of more than a Google trend.
