Harnaaz Sandhu Weight Gain Reason Finally Revealed — And It’s Not What You Think

For women in the public eye, there is a specific type of cruelty that goes by the name of concern, commentary, or casual observation rather than outright cruelty. After winning Miss Universe 2021 in Eilat, Israel, Harnaaz Sandhu entered the public eye with the pride of an entire country. She didn’t anticipate that within months, a portion of that same audience would turn against her, dissecting her body with the same fervor that they had previously used to applaud it.

The internet reacted harshly and quickly to Harnaaz’s obvious weight gain after she was crowned Miss Universe. There were comments on social media posts, beneath celebration reels, and even in places that ought to have felt secure. The fact that the majority of those typing those words had no idea what was truly going on inside her body only made it worse.

Harnaaz broke her silence after winning the title and disclosed that she had been diagnosed with celiac disease, an immunological response brought on by gluten, a protein present in wheat, barley, and rye. Many of her detractors might not even be familiar with the term.

Celiac disease is more than just a trendy food restriction or dietary preference. It is a true autoimmune disease that causes bloating, exhaustion, and erratic metabolic changes by interfering with the body’s ability to properly absorb nutrients. Managing this condition was anything but easy for someone who lived out of a suitcase across several continents and had to navigate an unfamiliar food landscape while everyone watched her every move.

When Harnaaz moved to New York City for the first time, she told reporters that she was still figuring out what her body could and could not handle in a whole new food environment. She learned about allergies she was previously unaware of, including those to soy, coconut, eggs, and gluten—ingredients that are subtly present in almost everything a person buys in a New York deli or coffee shop without giving it much thought. The invisible nature of this kind of suffering is difficult to ignore. Gaining weight appears easy from the outside. Clearly, the reality was much messier.

Then there was the Starbucks predicament, which she discussed openly on the Origin Story podcast in 2026. Because her Manhattan building was adjacent to a Starbucks, the scent developed into a sort of ritual. She talked about getting a venti caramel frappuccino—extra drizzle, extra everything—nearly every day after working out, which was making her feel more irritated than motivated. She acknowledged that she considered it to be coffee. Later on, she realized it was closer to dessert. What was already a challenging post-pageant physical adjustment was subtly made worse by that daily habit and a body already grappling with dietary sensitivities.

It was evident that Harnaaz wasn’t avoiding the changes. She told PTI, “Even if I’m fat, even if I’m thin, it’s my body, I love myself,” adding that she valued courage and self-assurance far more than meeting the aesthetic standards of others. However, she has also been open about the fact that being confident does not make online trolling painless. She was severely impacted by the bullying; she frequently sobbed, sometimes just before taking the stage due to the cacophony in her mind.

There is a feeling that the complete medical picture was never fully included in the public discourse surrounding her body weight. After months of intense competition preparation, the post-pageant phase brought a more laid-back routine with less regimented workouts, more time spent with family and food, and the relaxation that every person needs after prolonged high pressure. When you include celiac disease, some unidentified allergies, the strain of an international schedule, and a comfort-eating habit centered around sugary coffee that passed for post-workout fuel, the weight gain ceases to be a mystery.

Speaking candidly about her belief in body positivity, Harnaaz describes herself as one of the self-assured girls who embraces change rather than resisting it out of embarrassment. Eventually, she discovered what worked: a gluten-free diet, patience, and the self-control to stop worrying about the scale. She claims that after six months of persistent work, things started to change. A completely different chapter was revealed in her Bollywood debut in Baaghi 4. It remains to be seen if the journey behind it was noticed by the world.

Harnaaz Sandhu’s weight gain was never as straightforward as online commentators claimed. An autoimmune disease, a new city, emotional exhaustion, a learning curve regarding her own body, and the universal human propensity to reach for something sweet when everything else feels difficult were all part of the narrative. Compared to the narrative presented in comment sections, that is a much more interesting story.
