HEB NatureBest Jalapeño Product Recall: Over 50 Items Pulled From Texas and Louisiana Shelves

The fresh foods section of most H-E-B stores in Texas feels like a dependable anchor when you walk in on a typical Sunday afternoon. The guacamole containers are stacked and dated, the pico de gallo tubs are arranged in tidy rows, and everything looks just right. Right now, it’s more difficult to imagine that familiar order. Following a voluntary recall linked to possible salmonella contamination in jalapeño peppers, the San Antonio-based grocery chain is removing over fifty items from its shelves. It’s broad enough to make any typical H-E-B customer hesitate.

    What This Article Covers

    1. How jalapeños from a single Mexican farm triggered a massive H-E-B recall across Texas and Louisiana.
    2. Which H-E-B and NatureBest products are affected and what to do if you have them.
    3. How this recall connects to a fast-spreading salmonella outbreak already hitting 27 states.

Coast Citrus Distributors’ jalapeños-containing products were voluntarily recalled by Texas-based produce processor NatureBest Precut & Produce LLC. The impacted jalapeños were cultivated in Sinaloa, Mexico, which federal health investigators had previously identified weeks prior as the probable origin of a spreading multistate Salmonella outbreak.

At least 345 illnesses and dozens of hospital admissions had been reported in 27 states as of mid-August. Although no confirmed deaths have occurred, the number of cases continues to rise.

Between July 3 and August 5, stores in Texas and Louisiana received the impacted H-E-B and NatureBest merchandise. Given that the distribution window is longer than a month, many of these products may already be in refrigerators.

H-E-B Pico de Gallo in mild, medium, hot, and mango varieties, Jalapeño Popper Stuffed Mushrooms, diced jalapeños under both brand names, NatureBest Soup Mix, and a variety of in-store prepared foods like guacamole, ceviche, shrimp cocktail, cheese balls, and Mexican street corn are all included in the recalled lineup. For the same reason, Salata Dressings of Houston stopped selling its Jalapeño Avocado Dressing at H-E-B stores.

The way this outbreak developed upstream is noteworthy. The FDA traced the probable source of contamination to a single Sinaloa grower who supplied Coast Citrus Distributors, which had previously been identified as the distributor of the problematic peppers.

Early in August, Taylor Farms issued a recall for products containing jalapeño that were sold at Trader Joe’s and Kroger stores in 26 states. In essence, the NatureBest and H-E-B recall are two branches of the same tree. A reminder of how quickly one agricultural source can spread through a food system built on efficiency and volume is the fact that Chipotle and QDOBA were among the food service businesses that received peppers from the same supply chain.

According to H-E-B, every product that is currently available on its shelves is safe and unaffected by the recall. Following NatureBest’s notice, the company promptly removed the relevant items and stopped production using the implicated jalapeños. That was the anticipated response, and by most accounts, it was resolved right away. Even so, it’s difficult to forget the weeks when those goods were widely available—sitting in refrigerators, being scooped onto chips at backyard cookouts, and appearing in ceviche dishes on sweltering July afternoons.

Fever, diarrhea, nausea, and cramping in the stomach are among the symptoms of salmonella that usually appear six hours to six days after exposure. Most people get better in a week or less. However, in more severe cases, the bacteria can enter the bloodstream and cause more serious complications, especially in young children, the elderly, or those with compromised immune systems. Given the number of ready-to-eat products involved, the FDA has identified that risk in its recall language, and it is important to take this seriously. These are not foods that are cooked before eating. Pico de gallo travels directly from the container to the table.

It is recommended that anyone who bought the impacted products not consume them, dispose of them right away, and return them to the retailer for a refund. During regular business hours, you can reach NatureBest at (713) 278-0425. Although the precise number of customers who may have been exposed through H-E-B in particular is still unknown, it is probably substantial given the chain’s size throughout Texas. The investigation is still in progress, and it might take weeks to fully understand the situation.
