Top US Convenience Store Chains Revealed — And the Winner Isn’t Who You Think

When you walk into a Wawa on a Tuesday morning, you’ll see a truck driver in the back choosing between two types of chips, someone tapping through a hoagie order on the touchscreen kiosk, and a quiet line at the coffee station. It has that lived-in feel to it—familiar, practical, and leisurely. For many years, the argument over the best convenience chain felt like a test of regional loyalty: Sheetz loyalists dispersed throughout Appalachia, Buc-ee pilgrims throughout the South, and Wawa devotees in the Northeast. However, the results of the 2026 American Customer Satisfaction Index have changed the game in a way that very few anticipated.

Meijer. That’s the solution. In this year’s ACSI Convenience Store Study, a Grand Rapids, Michigan-based retailer that most people outside the Midwest primarily recognize as a grocery store—the kind of place you go for a full cart, a flat of sparkling water, and probably a pair of socks—took first place. It improved six full points from its 2025 score of 76 to 82 out of 100. It’s not insignificant; the ACSI referred to it as the study’s biggest single-year improvement. That chain isn’t just changing its coffee station; it’s also redefining how people view it.

With plans for western Pennsylvania, Meijer’s convenience division operates through 244 Meijer Express locations, the majority of which are connected to or close to its supercenters in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin. The integration of the fuel experience with the company’s larger mPerks loyalty program appears to be working, and it’s worth taking a moment to consider this. Rewards are earned at the pump and can be redeemed for merchandise and groceries. It has a smoothness that larger, more ostentatious chains haven’t quite been able to match. At seven in the morning, a weary commuter is usually looking for frictionless utility.

In the meantime, Buc-ee’s, the massive beaver-branded restaurant with 120 pump stations, immaculate restrooms, and a wall of beef jerky longer than most people’s living rooms, fell from a score of 79 in 2025 to 77 in 2026. Not only did it lose the top spot nationally, but it was also unable to claim the South. Wawa defeated it in its own territory, tying QuikTrip and Sheetz for second place nationally at 80. While the average convenience store customer’s expectations have subtly increased, the gap between chains is closing.

There seems to be a real shift in what Americans want from convenience stores in 2026. For the majority of the 20th century, the cheap cup of mediocre coffee and a stale rack of chips was the only option available, but it was never a winning combination. A quick meal, a clean experience, and a reward for showing up seem to be what people want these days. It’s possible that a tighter, more cohesive regional network like Meijer’s is easier to consistently replicate than chains like Buc-ee’s, despite their cult following and size. Customer satisfaction and ambition don’t always go hand in hand.

The former top-ranked Kwik Trip dropped 6% from its 2025 position, while Murphy USA and Kwik Trip tied for fifth place with scores of 79. This serves as a reminder that winning a satisfaction survey is far from permanent. Convenience chains are still catching up to growing expectations, as evidenced by the overall industry satisfaction score, which dropped 1% to 75 out of 100. Although one point might not seem like much, it adds up to a pattern among the 9,475 customers who were polled.

The biggest US chains by number of locations are still the well-known names if you zoom out to sheer volume. With more than 12,700 US locations, 7-Eleven is in the lead, followed by Casey’s General Stores with almost 2,921 locations and Alimentation Couche-Tard’s Circle K. Although they dominate the physical map of American highways, these aren’t always the customer favorites because size and satisfaction tend to move in different directions. It’s interesting to see those figures next to the satisfaction rankings because the largest operator isn’t typically the most cherished.

It’s difficult to ignore the fact that the chains moving up these rankings frequently have one thing in common: despite their growth, they still feel intimate locally. Meijer is a name that comes up at family dinners; it’s a Midwest institution. Wawa has strong ties to the mid-Atlantic. A family dairy gave rise to Sheetz. Tulsa is where QuikTrip got its start. These aren’t companies that suddenly appeared out of nowhere. Customers appear to bring their upbringing with them to the pump.

Buc-ee’s will most likely be alright. There is no decrease in the lines at their stations. However, the 2026 rankings serve as a helpful reminder that the most talked-about store isn’t always the most fulfilling. In Grand Rapids, Michigan, discreetly distributing loyalty points at a pump can occasionally be the solution.
