The Taco Bell Olivia Rodrigo Baja Blast Just Dropped, and the Internet Is Already Obsessed

It began with a cup. An Instagram post by someone who obviously couldn’t believe what they were holding shows a bright, almost aggressively pink cup resting on a teal counter inside a Taco Bell somewhere in Southern California. The thing was all over the place in a matter of hours. When the Taco Bell Olivia Rodrigo Baja Blast—officially called “You Seem Pretty Pink for a Baja Blast”—arrived, the internet responded as it usually does when a pop star and a fast-food restaurant manage to do something truly right.

In an Instagram post that received over 1.6 million likes in less than a day, Rodrigo herself referred to it as her greatest professional accomplishment. For someone who wrote “drivers license” at the age of 17 and won the Grammy Awards, that is an amazing statement.

However, the sincerity with which she means it is almost endearing. For years, she has been publicly passionate about Baja Blast—not in a sponsored-post manner, but rather in the manner that real people discuss drinks they genuinely enjoy. “One of my favorite drinks ever is a Mountain Dew Baja Blast,” she replied. It’s not advertising copy. That sounds like something you might hear in a parking lot.

The beverage itself combines pink lemonade with Baja Blast’s distinctive tropical lime to create something that is technically a Mountain Dew but in some ways more. Fans in Southern California had an early taste of it on August 29 at Live Más Cafés, Taco Bell’s beverage-focused concept restaurants, which coincided with the opening of Rodrigo’s all-female music festival, Daisy Chain Fields, in Irvine. The product launched nationwide on September 24.

According to reports, that festival raised $10 million for groups that support women and girls, such as the Black Mamas Matter Alliance and Planned Parenthood. A portion of that same spirit is carried over into the drink, with 10% of each purchase going to Girls Inc.

The way Taco Bell handled this is noteworthy. The company didn’t simply put Rodrigo’s name on an already-existing beverage and call it a campaign. A festival connection, personalized packaging reflecting her style, a limited-edition Pretty Pink Picnic Kit sweepstakes for Rewards members, and an exclusive Freeze version available only at Live Más Cafés in Southern California, Dallas, Houston, and Las Vegas are all part of the real world they created around it. That’s a surprisingly well-thought-out creative vision for a fast-food company.

Additionally, this is the first time a limited-time flavor has appeared in restaurants across the country in Baja Blast’s more than 20 years of existence. Last year, Baja Midnight made its permanent debut. Although the campaign window officially ends on October 1, it’s unclear if this pink lemonade version will take a similar route. However, social media volumes indicate that demand isn’t exactly declining.

It’s difficult to ignore the fact that the majority of people appear genuinely surprised by how much they like it when watching the accumulation of taste-test videos on YouTube and TikTok. That’s probably the best result Taco Bell could have hoped for. The success of this kind of partnership depends on the product’s ability to stand on its own, independent of the celebrity endorsement. It appears that it can, based on what is currently available.

The best way to describe her vision of friends listening to her album in a parking lot with Baja Blast in hand was by Rodrigo. It’s a tiny, targeted image that, for some reason, gives the entire thing a more genuine feel than marketing.
