Muni Long’s Weight Gain Explained – No, She’s Not Pregnant — She’s Just Living Her Best Life

Whispering has never been Muni Long’s style. Thus, the Grammy-winning singer did what she always does when the internet declared her body to be public property this past summer: she responded loudly and impatiently. When she went live on Instagram on the evening of July 28, 2025, she put an end to weeks of online rumors about her altered appearance in a way that only Muni Long can. Not getting pregnant. No sickness. Just cake, lobster towers, shrimp, and steak, as she described it. A lot of cake.

Like most of these things, it began when strangers on the internet noticed something. As soon as fans and followers noticed that Muni Long appeared different—fuller in the face and heavier throughout the frame—the comment sections were filled with the typical armchair diagnoses. Some claimed she was expecting a child. Others mentioned lupus, a disease she has previously discussed, speculating that her weight gain may indicate a deterioration in her health. As usual, the rumor mill spun quickly and in an ugly way.

The familiarity of this entire arc, however, is telling. Earlier in the summer of 2025, Lizzo was subjected to almost the same treatment: before-and-after pictures, Ozempic accusations, and conjecture that her body owed the public an explanation. Last year, Ice Spice also had to deal with it; she was nearly forced to post videos of herself working out in order to appease critics who felt entitled to know why she had lost weight. At this point, the cycle is so consistent that it practically has a script. When a female artist’s appearance shifts, the internet holds an unofficial tribunal, and the artist eventually reacts. The response is what shifts.

In all honesty, Muni Long’s answer was different. She described herself as fluffy and claimed to enjoy her weight of 145 pounds, which she voluntarily gave herself. That framing is important. It contains a certain refusal, a purposeful rejection of the notion that a woman in the public eye should experience relief from weight loss or shame from weight gain. “I have family that loves me as long as I’m alive and I’m breathing,” she declared during the Live. I’m content and in good health.” It’s difficult to ignore how straightforward her statement was. No tears, no long explanations. Just being clear.

The relationship between the bodies of female musicians and the music industry has always been complex and occasionally cruel. There is a lengthy and uncomfortable history of artists being forced to maintain particular looks in order to sustain their careers, as if a voice could somehow be diminished by a number on a scale. Those older, unwritten rules don’t seem to bother Muni Long, who first established her reputation as a behind-the-scenes songwriter writing hits for other people before fully stepping into her own spotlight.

Two days prior to the Instagram Live, she gave a performance at GloRilla’s first Glo Bash. She will travel with Brandy and Monica on “The Boy Is Mine Tour” starting in October and continuing through December. The reservations point to a person whose career is advancing due to her talent rather than one whose path is determined by how she appears in pictures.

Muni Long refrained from framing her weight gain as a problem that needed to be solved or a story that needed an apology during that Instagram Live, which was comparatively straightforward but somehow still uncommon. She had been living freely and eating well, and it seemed to truly annoy her that this needed to be defended. She told the audience, “Y’all are so nosy, entitled, and rude,” in a direct manner that leaves little opportunity for misunderstanding.

It’s still unclear if incidents like these genuinely change how society views celebrity bodies in general. With the next artist, the next comment section, and the next round of uninvited diagnoses, the cycle usually starts over. However, there’s something about witnessing someone stand in the middle of that cycle and not allow it to affect them. Muni Long didn’t use the internet to reassure anyone. She didn’t ask if the rest of us were okay with it; instead, she came to say she was fine.
